New unwanted noise

Car is a 4200 manual. Had a run to Germany last week. Cruising at 80-100mph (not in the UK !) there was a very smooth transmission hum. Quite normal. Gradually, (over a 1000 miles or so) at about 40-60 mph I became aware of a droning and slight increase in vibration. I monitored the tone over different road surfaces, speeds, turning left or right. Thought maybe rear left wheel bearing was starting to "sing" but couldn't get the tone to change on left or right hand sharp bends (normal sort of test). The only time it varied was on undulations when the load was reduced over the "peaks" and it went quiet, just for a moment. Sometime ago someone had (perhaps) similar vibrations/noises when the bearing in the drive shaft/torque tube gave up..........I also remember pictures of the shaft on V blocks clocking the "bend" in the shaft. Haven't gone any further with the investigation yet eg checking wheel bearings etc but would like to read again the original fix on the torque tube - the worst case scenario ! Can't find it. Any idea where it is ? Anyone accessed rear wheel bearings........can it be got at by removing the brake disc/handbrake drum or does the half shaft have to come out ?

No.........don't think so

No don't think so............It's only when the wheels are rotating at speed. So methinks that it's the wheel bearing, the differential bearings, drive shaft or torque tube shaft. I've put it in neutral at 60mph downhill and de-clutched, noise doesn't change.

Had the wheel bearing problem, it wasn't so much the bearing but sleeve or housing that gave up.......simple enough fix, need s SDed though, what year is car?

Had similar with a prop shaft centre support bearing on wifes Merc. Took ages to track down, and only once it got a lot worse.

Wheel bearing ?

Preliminary skirmish today with 2 trolley jacks suggests that there is some play on the rear nearside wheel bearing. Will dismantle and check it out and produce a "how to" for the records. Might be useful for others in the forum.

SD - the diagnostics wotsit. As in "it needed plugging into the SD thingy to find out what was wrong".

The how-to would be great - thanks.

It must be pretty bad is detectable on jacking up, normally, you hear it before you feel it

Maybe not a wheel bearing

After getting a full crawl under the car and swinging about on the wheels I'm not convinced that there is a wheel bearing problem. Couldn't feel the "looseness" I thought I'd found. There is a slight noise but nothing like it was when I was "focused" on it during the 6-8 hour drive back from Germany. Further investigation to follow.............................

Noise progress

Agree that it might not be feelable or hearable - without any load on wheels. As an elimination exercise (and it's nearly due) I've drained the gearbox oil and found no metal debris on the magnetic drain plug. Good news ! Bad news...........I thought it wise to remove, check and clean the gearbox oil filter, Not many people have done that according to Europarts, as they don't keep them in stock. It's now on order from Italy. It could be that they are not often checked as it won't come out ! I've ordered a new one in case it's "destroyed" during it's reluctant exit from the gearbox casing.
Will report progress. Anyone checked or changed theirs ?

Yes mines been done, along with a full gearbox rebuild, mine had a faint bearing noise that turned out to be lightly pitted bearings, caused we think by condensation build up in the casing due to lack of use, oil and sump plug showed no traces of debris, I now change the oil on an a yearly basis, also check the bearing at the rear of the bell housing, this is known to fail and spin in it's housing.

minor update

Oil filter removed (eventually). No signs of metallic particles. New oil in and new filter fitted. I need a test drive with someone driving so I can get in the back and see which side the noise is loudest.....my guess is the left. Will need to dismantle the strut assembly to get at the bearing.

Don't think it can be the front (engine speed) shaft bearing as I've dropped it into neutral down a hill so the shaft is at engine speed while the car is at 60mph and noise was still there. My suspicion was differential bearings (taper rollers), second motion shaft bearings which carries the pinion or wheel bearings. Fairly happy that transaxle internals are good so will investigate wheel bearings.

Repeat many times before sleep..............I must not have nightmares of munching gear teeth or crumbling taper roller bearings!!!!!!!!!!!!!
