Yup my manual does that too but only when the gearbox is cold. Will have it done come clutch time

Yes, that's right. They can get noisy, but it's not anything that causes any further issues really.
The roof system is a bit complex, but it's logical once you work it out. can you describe the symptoms? Do you get any reaction to the button at all? (must have handbrake on, and be on reasonably flat ground) If you hear the whirring of the pump, what part of the sequence does it stop at? Does it stop at the same place going down and up?
The scuttle shake goes with the early ones I'm afraid. It was addressed in the 2003MY and onwards by a series of chassis stiffening measures - (I think this mostly consisted of filling some of the box sections in the chassis, including the screen surround with some sort of expanding structural foam..)
Once you get them going right they are great fun and getting increasingly rare - here's mine featured from last year

Ok Thanks Andy , here goes .
On the button the rear of the hood lifts up then stops , nothing else , it will go back down and lock ok too .
I popped the plug out from behind the passenger seat and released the pressure plate , then the windows wouldn’t work .
After that I drove for about 20 miles to run an errand , in that time the windows started working again .
When I got home I tried again but this time I brought the 2 buttons in the cubby box between the seats into play , everything unlatched as it said in the manual , the top lifted off the windscreen and started to fold into the boot but then stopped , I gave it a few gentle pushes and pulls , and kept tapping the plate behind the seat and toggling all three switches but nothing , it was jammed .
At this point my neighbour came out to see what I was doing , after about 10 mins we tried the roof button again and hey presto the roof folded up and disappeared into the back .
I haven’t dared to try putting it back up yet

Mike, when I had a problem with the roof recently I cleaned the 4 fuses up in the battery compartment which have seemed to do the trick, going through the receipts this had been a problem area for my car in the past.
Mine is a manual 2003 car and apart from this little glitch and a few moments of paranoia which turned out to be nothing the car has been great, already clocking up 2500 miles since I bought it in March.

Check for slack in the webbing straps that pull the metal roof slats... when they or the rubber bands become worn/loose they stop the roof folding as it should and trip the safety stops.

Apparently the car has been in deep storage for the last couple of years or so , so that could do the trick .

By the sounds of it the roof just needs cycling a few times. If its been in storage for a while it may be that either a microswitch or the hydraulics are a bit sticky. It seems that the fundamentals are all there. Keep using it.

Thanks Andy I will give it a go , I tried to convince myself that as long as it was down that would be ok , but there are bound to be times when I get caught by the weather and a working top would be handy .
