A total of 14,626 people have lost their lives on NI roads since records began in 1931 and 75,070 have suffered serious injuries since these were first recorded in 1971.

In 1931, there were 114 road deaths. This number increased over the years and peaked in 1972 with 372 deaths....( this stat was a higher total than killed in the troubles that year!!!)

In 2012, road fatalities were the lowest on record.....around 44 I believe........back up to 56 this year

Italics my additions....scary reading back in the 70s though

Hmm... We mostly survived the 70's Frank, slim regard to safety back then; Ford were still putting the fuel fillers and tanks under the rear bumpers like the Pinto!!!!

resulting in people sitting in a fireball with even a mild rear end shunt...

Mind you my first four or five cars could all be locked and started with the same worn out key (yes I did have my first car at just 12)!!! No legal requirement to wear seatbelts and indeed they were not even standard fit in the back in the early part of the decade.

These days are very different, the single biggest expenditure in car design now is occupant safety and the second is non-occupant safety, as indeed it needs to be.

I remember road traffic deaths were always higher than the Troubles but I never heard of anyone nervous about going to Norn Iron because of the driving.
