Thought I would share this with you.

My old 1968 Mercedes 280 SE coupe which had been subject to a full and comprehensive restoration. It had full service history all the MOT's and of course matching numbers.

The car was 100% perfect and had a fortune spent on it.

It was the only car I actually made a profit on after selling it back to the guy I had bought it from. Big mistake selling as this car was just so classy and probably the most beautiful car I have owned.

I just love the dashboard in those, beautiful car!

Normally the wood is all faded and cracked in these cars. Mine was like brand new. The detailing of the restoration was fantastic. The car was owned by an old man. When he passed away his wife sold the car to the Mercedes specialist who had been maintaining it. The owner of the garage bought the car for himself and after spending 2 years restoring it then sold it to me.

I had been looking for 3 years for one of these cars but every one I saw was in such a bad state that I walked away.

Then just as I was about to give up a friend told me of one that he had heard of that was perfect.

When I saw the car for the first time it was love at first sight. On the boot of the car was a Mercedes box with the 280 SE badge in it. When I asked why the badge wasn't fixed to the car the guy told me he was waiting for some rubber grommets for the pins so there would be no danger of any potential rust. This confirmed that I was dealing with a perfectionist and I bought the car there and then

I love old Mercs. It may be hugely disagreed on here, but for me my favourite cars are...

- Sports Cars: Italian
- Vintage Saloon/Vintage GT's: Mercedes.

The old SL's (1970's back) are for me some of the beautiful cars ever made. And I just love the old saloons, they had presence, they oozed quality and class. Just stunning.

I've got to say, it worries me when I see what has happened to Merc, that Maserati's current aim may turn them into a FIAT.

Look at Rolls Royce. A very classy stately car manufacturer, it is now quite crass.

The old man used to have a 300SEL with the 3.5 V8, 1971 or 72 from what I remember. It was absolutely mint but he sold it a few years ago. Real classy car.

How odd, my route to Maserati was via a classic 230e 1980 so not as old but built like a barge and oozed quality; the kids all loved the big 'sprung seats' :)

Many years ago I was tyre-kicking (with a Biturbo owner as it happens) at an auction.

One of the items which interested us was a similar age stretched 500 S previously owned by the Sultan of Oman, it came with a partition between driver and passengers and even had the royal crest on the head-restraints and two little flag poles on the wings. I remember it was immaculate, doubtless maintained regardless of cost, and it went for GBP £5,000.

If only I had the garage space.
