Meraks look pretty but engineering wise they are no Bora.

£100k that's just mad and it won't sell.

That will be why it's been on sale for over two years then! I'm sure it was about £60k back then. I think I'll put my AC up for 110k might as well join in the madness.

I've been looking out for either a Bora or Marek. Seems that Bora's are £80-£110k while Marek's come in at £30-50k in todays market.

I've seen two of the Bora's that came to auction in the last year or so at around the £90k mark and they were both complete sheds. I am sure they could be tidied up and used for relatively little but to get them up to a high standard you would probably have been looking at another £50-60K judging by my own current experience (that is just bodywork and excludes engine or gearbox rebuild and interior etc.,..) - and my car didn't seem that bad before we started.

I am not aware of any top condition Bora's coming to market recently but I suspect if one did you would need considerably more than £80-100k to buy it in the current market. I've owned mine since 1998 so feel free to ask if you want to know about Bora ownership and what to look for etc.,..

I suppose a lot depends on what you want to end up with a good useable car or something a little better than that.

To me that car is going to need a full repaint a) because of all the holes that have been drilled for extra catches, external switches etc.,.. and b) because I would want to return it to the original colour. If the car is solid that probably means a cost with stripping it, repairing the holes, prep work and paint of circa £20-30k but as I said in my previous post things can soon escalate once the car is stripped especially if you have it taken back to bare metal. My car was also an older restoration and did not look that bad. It initially went in to repair damage caused when the boot latch failed and the lid flipped up hitting the windscreen and damaging the scuttle. This involved stripping the front of the car and once that was back to bare metal it seemed to make sense to strip back the rest of the car and repaint the whole thing. However, this revealed a lot of unexpected work, poor previous repairs and a lot of hidden corrosion that we had no idea was there because of the cars complex structure. To date the stripping down and metalwork have cost circa £50k and the final bits of metal work, preparation and paint will cost a further £13k and it will still all need putting back together replacing and repairing as necessary (this phase will now be brought in house as when the work started I was in a different business and now I can have the remaining work done at trade).

The Bora is more of a GT type car than a sports car so you would almost certainly want to put all the suspension back to a more road orientated set up and obviously the condition of the engine and gearbox would need to be assessed as they will have been used much harder than in a car used as a road car.

So this car could be VERY expensive to convert properly back to a good road car.

If you wanted to see a Bora in bare metal mine is due to be painted in 10 days or so, so I could arrange for you to see it, the car is currently located in your part of the world.

Robin

Robin - your signature needs updating. I know about the TR8, but knowing you there will have been other additions and possibly sales in the past few months!!

It is unfortunate but most older cars will need more restoration than you would first think. Making the decision to strip a car to the metal nearly always shows up hidden surprises but it is the only way to know what you have. This takes time and unless you are extremely skilled time costs money.

I find it extremely hard to understand where the classic car market is going as it appears all sorts of mundane motors from not that long ago are bringing silly money. Don't get me wrong I was brought up on early Escorts but how a low spec Mk1 or 2 can be worth £20k plus is beyond me.

Hopefully the later 90s onward Maseratis will follow the trend soon and then I can afford to put some money into the QP to make it the car it is trying to be.

Hi Mark,

Signature updated.

Last car sold was the Jaguar XJS Convertible which went just before we all went to Italy. Plan is to sell 5 or so in the Spring (one being a 69 Corvette I haven't listed as I never intended to keep that) and take things from there,

Regards,

Robin

Hi Robin

Thanks for the input, very useful indeed. I hadn't appreciated how much a full bare metal restore costs. I'd be interested to see the Bora if its nearby. Can you message me? For what its worth I think, given the current market, the value of the car at the end will justify the work and cost you have out in. With F 308 fibre glass cars are going for £150k+, I think the Bora could be a £200k+ car within a few years given its rarity.
