Say what you like but I made a shed load of wonga under her rule, I lost all of it under subsequent pi$$ poor governments since. We now live in a world run by big money companies and governments stirring up false paranoia and call invasions 'peace keeping' at least she called the Falklands a war!

I don't agree with everything she did but the unions did need sorting out and she took them on and won.

The 80's was the time to be an entrepreneur I started with nothing (ok a £40 cortina) and built a £1,000,000 turnover company in just a few years but you could do that then, knobody said you couldn't...

I have to agree, Frank. Personally I'm quite glad to be missing the outpouring of bile and vitriol. Particularly by many (not you dem) who would appear to not even have been *born* by the time she was out.

Agree with Newton, she created the environment for people to succeed and they did....to have it taken away by subsequent governments. Still agree with poll tax but this may be more controversial!

Dem you must be a youngster mate,do you must remember Blue Peter!..
From my part of the world in Coventry talented guys used to make and design lots of good stuff here, sold all over the world, contributing to the UK balence of payments in a big way,but buy the late 80's it was all over, all the factories were closeing replaced with this so called service industry, with its round and round money, greed and lots of wonga for me was then the name of the game, but puting nothing back into the system, hence most of the the shite were into today!
Thatcher started all this..

Regardless of her policies she at least had principles and beliefs which she fought for, and IMHO she would not have tolerated some of the self serving, two-faced, back-stabbing, gravy train jumping, so-called policitians we have these days.

Not that I'm biased of course.........

Sorry Dem, didn't mean to spark off political debate! She was an Iron Lady though and as Phil said wouldn't tolerate today's culture. She probably did go a bit "mad" towards the end.
Cheers Blu

She was instrumental in the ending of the cold war, which must have been a good thing. Although I suppose we have hot wars, now. (Did peace create a vacuum which needed to be filled by arms-dealers ?) We're also left with a somewhat flakey relationship with Russia. Too much oil-dependence can't be healthy. Shall we move on to fracking?

Probably true Dave but those of us that can remember the 70's, 3 day weeks and power cuts, factory shutdowns, protected jobs and closed shops would surely look back and agree it couldn't continue. Sadly I also agree that we are now a 'service industry' nation which is no good at all. We have a 30-year gap in engineering skills that we absolutely have to plug and get back to producing stuff now or we will plummet in the world economy to become a third world country.

I'm doing my bit; one day at a time...

Some bad and good desicions to be honest....Strongest PM we had for years and not seen anyone with balls big enough to do a good job since..........As above the Unions of the time needed sorting out and she did that.........Just look at what we have had since.......Weak puppets.....But hey it was a different era....

I am surprised that a non Brittish guy (Dem) started a thread about one of your most important politician. In Greece it would have been #1 subject to discuss for days.

She was also instrumental in dividing a country and is probably still yet Salmonds greatest weapon. I lived through the poll tax Thatcher era. The shock of the media of some of the "celebrations" taking part, is another example of just how strong feelings have run. Good for some, bad for others.

Being a child of Thatcher she had one thing that subsequent PM's have not: 'Balls' which is a bit odd when you think about it.

Fiercely patriotic with the ability to handle any foreign leader. She didn't get it all right, Poll tax was a disaster but those unions needed sorting and she did just that. OK the miners would tell you different but the days of coal were coming to an end and they could just not accept it.

I did hear a guy being interviewed on the Jeremy Vine show a few months back that was organising a big party for the day Maggie died blaming her for ruining his life....you had the same opportunites as the rest or us, what a w@nker!

Thanks Maggie, if it were not for you I would be driving a Mazda, not a Maserati :)

Re the miners; It was always Maggies fault and never Scargills. He used the mining industry as a weapon to try and increase the power of the unions, especially his. It was about his ego trip, not the mines. He should have realised that the mines were no longer competitive and needed a radical overhaul and if they had have been, sure it would have been a much smaller industry, but there would still have been a mining industry left today. A lot of profitable pits that were going to be kept open were flooded out and lost because the maintenance men didn't maintain them. Also, I don't think we would have been quite so entrenched in the 'European Project' if we still have a PM with her resolve. Maggies dead, long live Maggie and bollox to the pinko w4nkers dancing on her grave.

Wilson closed more mines than Thatcher by 3 to 1... yet people only remember her. British manufacturing was doomed, again the unions had way too much power and the output was awful British Leyland anyone? She inherited a mess, 3 day weeks, power cuts and turned it around (sounds familiar to the current situation after years of a Labour spend). Tough as old boots and fiercely patriotic, attributes severely lacking in our modern day politicians.
