Ok just got back from France at stansted airport reversed the car out of the space and a urfull clanking noise from , I think the hand brake shoes sticking , started to drive off gig up to 30 mph and it sounded like someone was banging a hammer in the wheel arch so pulled over and tried the hand brake on and off a few times , steadily head off again and all seam well . Got home after sitting in the bloody trafic for two hours applied thd hand brake and nothing , ratched all the way up . Any one any ideas of what has happened ?

Yep, I think Frank has the nail on the head there, common issue.

If you leave the handbrake on, especially in winter, they weld to the inside of the disc. You pull away and it yanks the linings off the shoe base.

Then contact David Askew for the bits that are broken within mechanism.....if he has any left.....;)

Similar thing happened to me in Germany this year. My back cable was on its way out and left the shoes rubbing. Consequently one delaminated, there was a lot of vibration, the disc/drum got very hot and the handbrake lever came up vertical.

Easy job, did mine recently. Great how to guide in the technical section. Belfast brakes relining service (about £30) recommended but may not suit you if in a hurry. Main dealer price silly money.

I tried the handbrake once but it ripped all the skin off, so I never tried it again..!!

Hi
Lining came off one of mine last week
Was going to get it relined locally but Belfast breaks will turn it round in one day for £30 plus £10 postage.
Pretty straight forward job just take a couple of pics before you pull it all apart so it all goes back the right way round

ok guys replaced the handbrake shoes after work today , quite a easy job really a little fiddly in places but generally straight forward if you follow the excellent guide in the how to section. Also helped being in our workshop in the warm with good light to. It took all in all about 2 hours which also included skimming the inside and drilling out the holes so quite pleased with my self. Found out that the near side had totally delaminated the off side was ok though but obviously changed both.

Heres a few pics
