First project on my new GS successfully completed, replacing the Becker unit with a Blaupunkt Toronto BT 420

This has Bluetooth voice calling as well as streaming from my phone. I stream Spotify from my phone and would struggle to be without it now.

I chose this unit as I've had Blaupunkts before and always thought they were good, and crucially this unit didn't have any daft bling/animations. I paid a bit over £100 on ebay with the additional external microphone. I think the restrained look goes well with the GS.

Step 1.

Get the Becker out. I had the keys that just go in the slots on each side of the unit, push them out a bit and pull the unit out.

Step 2.

Disconnect the ISO plugs, should all be self explanatory. I managed to run the external mic unit out to the left of the steering wheel and will do a proper install on the mic to the top of the A pillar at a future date.

Step 3.

Plug in new unit and test! This is where it went a bit wrong for me. The unit powered up fine but it flashed 'TELEPHONE' all the time and wouldn't do anything. A bit of googling and I realised the pin that triggers the mute for the audio for telephone calls must be being activated. On the BT 420 that is PIN 2. I checked the wiring diagram on the Becker and it seemed that pin was unused. I tried a voltmeter on it with the ignition on and it read 0V so I was a bit confused. Anyway, I pulled this pin and taped it up, and tried the unit again. It worked! (If anyone knows what the pink #2 wire does on the Becker please comment)

Step 4.

install the cage. Push some of the tabs down with the cage all the way in the slot, securing the cage in the hole. Push the unit in.

Seems to work very well, particularly how you can download your whole phonebook to the unit and browse through it with the right scrollwheel.

Part 2 to follow when I am feeling brave enough to take some trim off to route the microphone.

Looks good...are you able to change the VW blue/red to green to match the Masers equipment back lighting?

Is there any way you can use the Becker microphone (is there one already built into car?) my Becker is hands free I think so there must be a microphone?

I don't know much about the phone setup in the GS. Don't think mine has any phone prep. I know in the 4200 there was the whole SIM in the armrest/NIT thing. Where is the microphone mounted?

Looks good and should sound better too.

The Alpine head unit in mine was a nice step up sound quality wise but i have had one or two remarks about its originality... Guess most people would not believe the standard stereo was so bad. If you like to listen to music when driving then i am going to guess you will soon be reading up on speaker upgrades too, standard equipment even with Auditorium 200 was not great.

I did think about this upgrade when I first bought the car, but the thing is I rarely listen to music in it and when I do it is at low volume so I can still hear the snap crackle and pops of the exhaust.

Just can't get enough of that.

Yeah the auditorium isn't great but probably good enough for me. I might change the front door speakers as one sounds damaged.

I do have a new problem this morning after disconnecting that #2 wire in the loom - speedometer doesn't work! Wondering if it is related to the speed sensitive volume, perhaps it needs to be grounded? Any advice appreciated.
