6 probably.....Liz doesn't travel well on boats so has t be Eurostar and the 6 hour journey but after a chat to Matt we may well look at the boat and a 3 hour journey....The boys would like the boat journey as well......

3 hour journey? 4, unless you want to risk having your wallet emptied!!

Newhaven to Dieppe seems the cheapest and a 3.5 hour journey the other side........

£298 with DFDS on their hi speed 3hr service from Newhaven to Dieppe. Sat to Sat in early August car and 4 passengers.

Never done that route before as I usually go Dover Calais but it's just too much driving.

I would say its 5 hours I done this journey a few times from Caen and le harve ,and as long as you stop half way for a coffee it's not that bad , and don't forget the motor ways are empty and as smooth as pool tables so no where near as tiring as driving in England.

Dieppe is definitely 5 hours through Le Mans & Tours. Calais probably 6. Allow an extra hour for pit stops and if it's in the August escape period add another for toll queues.

Well we are doing the long drive and short crossing.......Decided.....bit of a road trip....Eurostar for us...Dieppe is only 90 miles closer than Calais so it would say a 5 hour journey against 6ish from Calais...Either way Liz doesn't do boats.....

I agree the driving is so much more relaxing. Two years ago did Paris to Bordeaux in one hit bar fuel and toilet stops.

After my missus ****** up and left booking the ferry too late, we were getting prices of £550 upwards, the robbing *******, car and 4 passenger return, Portsmouth to Caen.

Ended up going Eurotunnel for free with Tesco Clubcard vouchers. 9hr jouney door to door but actualy quicker than going from Portsmouth and only 100 miles further in fuel and tolls.

TBH I would rather drive than be sat bored on a ferry.

Prices are silly Matt....We used Flybe to go to Italy and see that they fly to La Rochelle so checked prices..... £1711....Feck me ........ So driving it is for us as well as you say the extra fuel and time wise is not that different on Euro or the Ferry... Enjoy...

Indeed Andy, Tesco clubcard is 3 to 1 ratio on Eurotunnel. It priced out at £240 or £80 of Clubcard vouchers, basically free.

Extra tank of fuel so £75 and maybe £25 extra in tolls so £100 or £600, no contest!

Booking early is certainly the key. Just booked returned ticked to Geneva early September for annual boys weekend away in the Alps, and its £60 each. Good flights too, early evening Thursday, last flight Sunday night. Also booking flights for skiing next year less than £100 for a long weekend.

Finally decide how to get there....Flying to La Rouche from Bristol on the Thursday....2 night in a Hotel in the centre of La Rouche then a 40 min drive to the cottage...can not wait.

Cool, we are flying into Nice, three nights there, hiring car, driving to Monaco, Ventemiglia, Portofino and Cannes. Then heading to St Tropez for 7 night. This is our holiday after we had to cancel Lake Garda after little one broke her elbow. Cannot wait!

After the robbing French ferry wanted £750, yes, £750 for the car and 4 passengers from Portsmouth (15 mins from us) we went tunnel for free and on Tesco clubcard vouchers.

Its only an hour more driving too.

Ok, its a 6hr drive but we will be there by teatime then the holiday can begin.

My new car does 700 miles to the tank so its by far the cheapest route.

Phil, what date are you going?
