ENGINE WON'T TURN OFF

I think you have done the right things so far.

Do things like the radio stay on or the headlamps remain on when you turn the key to the off position? This would indicate that the ignition is staying live when the key is off, which would be the most likely cause. After that I would be pulling the start enable and ignition relays and checking that they aren’t sticking.
Hello again Zep. I've been trying to locate the start enable and ignition relays by looking in my owners manual (handbook), but can find nothing that seems to match.

Please could you enlighten me on the start enable and ignition relays - in particular where are they to be found? And how to check whether they are sticking, please?
Many thanks
Tony

The Cat is right, if things stay on when the key is off, 9 times out of 10 it’s going to be the switch. His method of testing it is also, inexplicably, good as well. ;)

There are 4 wires going to the switch and 4 key positions. At STOP there should be no continuity between any of the wires. If there is, then your switch is goosed.
Thank you Zep & C. I will try to find the connector tomorrow and do the testing as suggested.

Start with the switch. I don’t think you will need to go much further than that.

In the footwell there are lots of relays, page 163 of the manual. You can test them by applying 12v to the coil and making sure that the contacts make and break. Required equipment is a multimeter, some wires and a car battery (the one in your car is fine).

Thank you Zep. As the cable from the ignition switch dissappears forwards and unclipping it looked particulary awkward to do, I thought I'd try to find the appropriate relay first, just in case that would cure the not-turning-off problem.

I identified relay "D" under the dashboard as being a potential candidate. It's shown in the English language owners' manual as "Connected devices not cut out during ignition" but I was working from my French language oners' manual where it says "Services validé au démarrage" which I think means just the opposite. Anyway I pulled relay "D". This turned off the radio despite the ignition being switched on, but the engine span but would not start. Before trying to test the suspect relay I gave it a few taps to try to free it up and pushed it back in. The engine then fired up no problem AND STOPPED WHEN I TURNED IT OFF !!! I have rarely been so happy (with or without my clothes on...)
I've just ordered a replacement on Amazon which in theory should turn up tomorrow. I'll let you all know how I get on.
Many thanks to you all.
Tony

UPDATE
The relay ordered on Amazon yesterday arrived today. I fitted it and it works perfectly (i.e. the engine starts AND STOPS).

For information, the original relay (that failed by sticking closed) was a "BITRON B047E 12V 30A 46520412" - Bitron is Italian.
I replaced it with a "Bosch 0 332 011 007" - it was made in Portugal.

The price was 7.40€ including delivery (I live in France) - I bought 3 as there are several same spec. relays on the car - the other two have been put behind the battery access panel just in case.

So all is well that ends well, but rather annoying that it would appear to have been a complete coincidence that it happened to stick close whilst I was working on the sticky buttons.

Thanks again to all that helped me through this.
