Chaps, I know you like your cars RHD but if you ever fancy LHD Maseratis, Italy is the place to buy them from now. The new emergency laws to save the state from default have pushed up massively car tax (eg. About EUR 3k a year for a GranSport, EUR 2.5k for a 3200GT).

Some people I know in the business here are seeing a massive influx of requests from clients to put their cars on the market.

Happy hunting ;)

Someone I know who works at an official Maserati dealer in the North East of Italy just told me that in the last 2 days has had 15 phone calls from clients looking to sell their cars, take them off the road, or simply asking for help to get out of the situation.

GranSports were about EUR 35k or so. How can someone pay 10% of the car value in tax annually is beyond me. And that's on top of additional real estate taxes, petrol taxes, VAT, etc going up. Luxury car prices will come crushing down.

This will be interesting to watch. I actually prefer LHD cars, despite living in the UK, because I do much of my mileage on the continent.

At the moment they certainly have a long way to go before they match the UK's cheap prices. A 2004 QP can be around the ± EUR €35,000 region (GBP £30,000). Have a look here.

Does anyone have any other links?

What really worries me is that our authorities will see an opportunity in harmonising VED with other countries. Ireland is already EUR €2,100 for cars above 225 CO2. GBP £435 is a European bargain. I can't see that lasting forever.

I am not exaggerating when I say people are thinking of just getting the plates off the cars and park them for a few years. Paricularly the 3200GTs which are not too far from being recognised as historic vehicles (20 years old) and therefore able to pay minimal road tax.

On the other hand, there is also a fear that the age limit may soon be raised to 25 or 30 years.

Frankly, the situation is very dark.

Dire news.

If I read you right, you have to pay 10% of your car's value in tax pa? How do they work out the value and what happens if values half because of the tax?

It's about 3000 Euro p/a which equates to 10% of the vehicle value. God, I hope that doesn't come in here. There will be outrage!

As a Greek resident, let me give you my numbers: 1200 insurance, 1200 taxes fee, 700 additional fee(coming in the middle of the year) and to have a 4200 you should earn only to cover the car tax, at least 28000 euros, leading you to a tax of 3000 euros. 4900 in total without the insurance. AND this is for my Maser, that is above 5 years old. Below 5 years the taxes are +30%. Bon Appetitt!

Frank, if you wish to have the car on the road, you should pay the 1200.You can have a kind of discount on the 3000, in case you drive it only for some months.
Last year everything regading cars was raised to double. These b@st@rds at the government, suggested some four years ago to renew our cars, giving several advantages. Now there are no more advantages, but taxes everywhere...
German plates would be a solution.

Nope...what you do it get your car registered in Lithuania as belonging to a company......exploit all the loop holds......if you are in business Nikos and have contacts you could set it up yourself, make £1K-2K profit per vehicle.........

P

PS If you do...you owe me 10% of all profits........:)

Frank, just in case the Eurozone fails, i have to go to Lithuania every 6 months by car, and i'm not willing to do. With Germany i have some good contacts. On the other hand, i know what you mean, this happens a lot with offshore companies in Greece or Cyprus.
Until the end of the year i have some news about it!

PS:you'll get the 10% in Lancia tyres!!!:yeah:
