Bloody ****.

Anyone remember the car ad which boasted about how the car would run on three wheels (no, not Reliants!). Was it Citroen?

That's the thing, he wasn't going fast at all and you saw what happened to the car in terms of control. Not many drivers however experienced would have righted that one!

Imagine one at 135mph! Doesn't bear thinking about.

Yup....the DS...as long as it was a rear wheel ....didn't quite work on the heavy front end!

Blimey, very lucky. Goes to show how quickly things can go wrong.

They should show that to everyone who drives using their phones, thinking everything will always be ticketty boo.

Off track a bit, but I followed a guy today who was all over the place, because he was on the phone, and smoking. I'm sure many can do both, but this lad was a clear advertisment for why they say not too. I got out his way sharpish but at one point, cig out the window, phone in other hand he was wondering across the lines. Caused a lady in an Audi to swerve and slam the anchors on at one point causing a few others to brake heavlily behind her. Of course, he was completely oblivious. Completely.

Agree, I don't even notice bad driving most of the time as I do so many miles it just passes me by, if it didn't I'd end up getting road rage no doubt!

Feel sorry for this guy collecting the armco!

I take it that the left rear tyre blew judging by the way it slowly turned the car to the left. If so what would be the remedy? Off the throttle and steer to the right to correct the pull? Please somebody educate me. I've never dealt with a blowout in a car, just a motorcycle! And that was fun.

Rather perversely Martin I believe it is best practice not to brake hard but lift off and (after hitting the hazards) steer left gently as it would lighten the affected wheel.

It depends on how quickly the affected tyre blows and at what speed. It seems this guy wasn't going too fast (around 70mph). Most people's reaction is to hit the brakes hard and steer into the spin but that makes things worse and it is recommended to drive through the blowout or even give some power to negate the drag to whichever side the vehicle is being pulled.

Such people should be stopped and re-educated at the road side; a 9mil pill in the back of the head would do it. He's probably in the "I've Never had an accident but I've seen lots in my rear view mirror" gang.

Strangely the only high speed blowouts I've had myself have been on motorcycles, a front in the UK on a 30 year old Honda CD, a front in Cyprus two up on a 750 Honda chopper in flip flops and T-shirts! and a rear on a GS650GT Suzuki, fully loaded with shopping and a dog! two up at about a ton!!!! The only saving grace on the last one was having blasted off the lights I had both lanes of the A12 to myself to get it stopped....

Oddly I've never had a blowout in a car or van just punctures I've become 'aware of' and got it stopped. The shredded front at Rockingham last year in the Mas developed only whilst stationary...

The only time it ever happened to me was fortunately a lot less dramatic.

I was on the A6 heading north from the Alps in my GTV6, flat out, three up and luggage, had been going flat out since Chamonix and was making great progress when there was an almighty bang like a very loud ballon popping. I knew I hadn't run over anything so I was instantly pretty certain what it was and the car starting to sway gently from side to side confirmed it.

I was too scared to touch the brakes in case it was a front wheel gone so I just went power-off and let her roll onto the hard shoulder. Rear P6 completely gone - luckily no damage to rim nor car. Even luckier Alfa's of that era carried a full-sized spare so, despite having to empty the boot in its entirety, we were still underway very quickly again.

Wow, that was eye opening.

I've had a blowout on the GS; really motoring around mountain roads in Italy left rear went bang on a fast right hander, apart from the massive bang I wasn't sure anything was tremendously wrong, thought I may have hit something but pulled over to be sure.

Tyre was absolutely shredded and I got stuck in a town called Insulatia (irony at its finest) for 3 days until a set of rears could be found to fit, odd it being a Maserati in Italy, but hey-ho.

Had another blow out on a Mazda 626 pottering around Western Australia in my twenties, that only gave a mild wobble at around 70mph or so - didn't get stuck that time as the car had a bleedin' spare tyre.

Both the above were rear lefts leading me to think this guy had a front left go and have it dig in? Scary passenger ride, driver included.
