Just got of the phone with the council re: CCTV coverage. Its not quite as stated on the webpage.

In order to find out if they have coverage an email has to come in within 28 days of the incident from either the Police, a solicitor, or an insurance company. They will then look to see if they have anything. If they do then there is a charge of £134.67 to get hold of the footage.

So the only way I'm going to find out whether or not I can claim from a third party is to make a claim on the insurance or instruct a solicitor. So much for living in an Information Age.

After posting this I had a call from a CCTV operator that said that they'd got my email request. We talked through finding my car and he's now scanning the footage to see there is an incident visible. If there is then I can go from there :D

Unfortunately there is no footage of the actual incident. The camera is on the car for 30s and then pans around and is off it for around 3 mins.

The chap thinks he knows which vehicle made contact, a people carrier reversing out into it, but there's no proof.

He did say that he'd caught someone else earlier but that it's a bit pot luck.

Oh well, worth a try anyway.

Ask for the reg (if he will give it to you) then write to the DVLA informing them that you have it on CCTV, where they will write to the owner of the vehicle (it will probably never go to court) and scare the offender into admission. Its worth a try and costs nothing.

Yeah , make it a personal vendetta to catch the fu*ker . Inform the Police . There will be evidence on the car at the same hieght as the damage on your car , And paint ( its blue by the way ;P)
They might even do him for leaving the scene of an accident you never know . I would make it a little game of mine to catch him and make him pay , Or at least loose some sleep over it .

Agreed! make them squirm and think twice about fleeing the scene of an accident in future.

There'll be a comparable amount of damage on the other car, which will be hard to explain if the police do elect to drop by to say hello.

...or if the CCTV guy wont give you the reg, ask him if he will report it to the DVLA on your behalf?

They won't give me the reg. I might give the Police a call later to see if they are interested, given that there's no evidence of the contact other than circumstantial. Given the way that the CPS drops cases I wouldn't count on them taking it any further. Worth a chat though to see if there is interest.

He can't give you the reg because of data protection.

I'd certainly go back at the same time next week. I presume we are talking about a supermarket or town centre car park here? The blue people carrier might make the same visit every week. The damage will be visible.

Unfortunately I was visiting relatives at the other end of the country so going back wasn't an option.

CCTV images of people or objects that can be used to identify people are covered by data protection. The police can request a copy of the footage to track down the vehicle involved. Its unlikely they will follow it up sadly.

I can request it via a solicitor but as it doesn't show the impact I see little point It's cheaper to get the bumper repaired.

Yep, last week in my local high street.... x3 reverses into 67 plate Golf. Golf jumps a bit through impact, X3 drives off.... 67 plate now in two pieces and nasty scuffiness on bumper. I left a note on Golf of X3 number plate. Dunno why, not my car or anything to do with me really, but I was furious after seeing that.
