Axle stands dos and dont's?

Hi all,

My tyres need replacing all round and i want to get my wheels refurbed before fitting the new set.
I'm going to have to put the car up on axle stands so was just wondering if anyone has done this or if I'd be better off going for 2 wheels at a time?

A trivial matter I know but the thought of leaving the car up on stands doesn't sit well so any tips or reassurance would be very much appreciated.

I have done it Ru, I did front first then back and reverse lowering, best if you can get two trolley jacks and an assistant but not essential :)

Cheers Newton, precisely the tips I needed.
I was going to go it alone tomorrow morning but as I'm 1 trolley jack short I'll hang on until my 'assistant' and his jack can make it up after work. Front to rear seems obvious now YOU've said it..... I'm having one of those days!
Many thanks for your tips and reassurance, much appreciated.
Good luck with the rest of the progress with yours too :)

Just one other thing (I'm sure you already know); don't rest or jack on anything made of magnesium under there as they can shatter rather expensively!

I wasn't aware of the exposed magnesium parts. I've got a few blocks of oak to sure things up so will take extra care to locate these areas first.
I had a feeling there would be something worth knowing before I went at it, there usually is :)
Thanks again!

The jacking points are pretty obvious (on the 4200). I get the stands in as close as possible to the jacking points on the same longitudinal member. No problems as yet :)

Thanks C, I've never used stands so appreciate all helpful pointers from those who have. No problems as yet will do for me :)

I'm sure you'll be fine.
*If* you have a spare set of wheels, or similar, laying them down under the car can also be helpful, in the (unlikely) event of the car falling off the stands.
