Don't know it, but such a high spec '06 car at circa £15k has to be a bargain (depending on the condition of the usual expensive wear items such as clutch, brakes, tyres). If it stacks up after a phone call, it would be worth paying to have it checked. A similar spec car at a more specialist could easily be £20k or more, so a journey up-t-north might make sense (which is not something that one can say very often!).

I don't know it. But, other than having a full service history, one thing to check is the clutch wear reading. If the car is on its first clutch at 66,000 miles, then it will certainly be on its way out. A new clutch and ancillaries is expensive.

So, I suggest that if you're serious about it, you contact the seller and ask about the clutch. Whether it's the original, if not, when was it replaced and ask for a clutch wear reading.

Each one is different and there will be exceptions that some may post. But, a rule of thumb is that a clutch is good for roughly 50,000 miles if you're lucky.

it had a clutch release bearing and clutch seal just recently but no plate. The seller has no clutch % wear figure but I will double check he goes through the history.

full maser sh apparently - are maser dealers friendlier/more helpful than BMW in that they will vouch for a car if asked?

anyone know of an indie inspector anywhere near Wigan???

In my experience, yes. I can't comment on all of them but when I rang the main London dealer, HR Owen, for information on a car whose owner had managed to lose the service book, the dealer couldn't have been more helpful and read me out the full history of the car.

You can't generalise by brand. I've had really good and really bad BMW service experiences.

I wasn't referring to servicing, but specifically asking a dealer to vouch for the background of a car. Most main dealers will go nowhere near this idea because they fear liability in our sadly litigious society.......BMW have retracted from supporting this kind of request in the past 10 years in my experience.

Thanks Michael, I'll see what I can find out..
