Another question, what do most folk do when their standard 3 year warranty expire? Extend the Maserati one, take out a 3rd party one (if so, which) or self-fund?

Generally the view seems to be 'you pays your money and you takes your choice'. I haven't extended my warranty and will rely on the money I saved by not doing it if anything goes wrong. Whether the warranty is worth anything depends on what goes wrong and on the small print.

On an old 4200 or GS I’d think most problems would be put down to wear and tear so the insurer / warranty can get out of paying.

My personal view is that extending a warranty is a waste of money - and I would choose to not pay the premium and hope nothing too major goes wrong...
