For my three (GTS, Merc 350D AMG Sport, Merc ML 350D) last year was almost 3 grand to insure, this year with an Admiral Multi Car Policy 800 quid.

Am I complaining? Nope!

We got a good deal with Privilidge for the original three cars - 1999 Subaru Imprezza 2l sport, Honda s2000 (both with business use) and the masarati - both of insured to drive all three and the quotes totalled around £700. For the new addition, a subaru WRX sti to the fleet (again with business use and for both of us), AIB gave us a good quote and we may move all the others across when they come up for renewal.

We have had the family fleet (GT, new S-Max,and the teen kids 2x Punto turbos) with Admiral multicar for several years. They always do a good deal for new customers- the trick is each year when you get the inflated renewal price, is to cancel the policy and start a "new" one. Admiral are quite happy to do this. Just £1500 for the 4 cars this year...........We did have a claim on one of the Punto's and no complaints with how the claim was handled...

Thanks. I concluded that the initial year was somewhat of a 'loss leader' to some degree, but that's fine.

Good to hear that any claim was fine. That was the important aspect. Not bothered particularly about penny pinching just fed up with being fleeced or poor cover

I've AIB chasing a like for like and see what the next 24 hours brings

Wellllllllll.

That's even more interesting. AIB have more or less matched the Admiral quote within £5. Excess: some a bit more, some a bit less, all cars covered with NCB protection, legal cover and 30 days EUR cover (which I expect is extra with Admiral). With the Firm that owns Lancaster and Zenith.

Lesson: Even if both are "new customer loss leaders", then complacency with one's trusted broker isn't wise

I'll ponder and decide tomorrow.

I’m also with Admiral, been with them a number of years now. The past few years I’ve actually seen the cost reduce on my 2 cars. Never had to claim so far though.

Some of the unexpected things seem to include that the premium sometimes goes down when you add more drivers, and sometimes goes UP when you take a higher excess (as underwriters think this means you have a record of small accidents).

3rd Party isn't enough! Check your policies very carefully before taking your cars over there...

The conclusion, a surprising exercise.

In the end I opted for Admiral. Although AIB were close to within £100 or so for all three cars, they weren't able to stagger the switch-on of the two vehicles which still had 4 or 5 months remaining cover on existing policies (refunds are bad values).

I'd have preferred to have opted for AIB with a reputable insurance company, however, not only were Admiral more competitive, they can switch on two of the three later.

They'll all converge for renewal at this time next year, and certainly try AIB again.
