4200 Speaker upgrade

There are lots of helpful suggestions about upgrading the audio on the forum, but there seems to be a bit of a conflict about the crossovers.
I am planning a very simple upgrade, just replacing the front and rear door speakers, probably with JL ones.
With the fronts, some report not installing the crossover, just swapping the 6.5" driver, others report the crossover is in the tweeter so need an external one if this is changed. Would be nice not to need the crossover to be installed if things will work by simply changing the drivers.
Any advice greatly received.

You will need a crossover but any decent component speaker set will come with one. You'll want to use the new speaker crossover anyway as it's matched to the set and cuts off at the proper frequency. Space isn't an issue either since the xover is most likely just going to be an inline cap and there's plenty of space in the door's tweeter area.

Thanks, these were the posts that might be worry about the crossover...

Hi Matt... not a fan of the clarion mini amp? Could you recommend something please? There are loads of options for the same price just not sure if they will all fit in the void under the centre console

Ok I will discount the rear shelf speakers and get some better 5x7's (3 way or 4 way) and amp with the money saved... didn't think running 4no speakers off 2 channels would sound very good tbh.
I am afraid this is not my area of expertise so Ill let someone else recommend something.

Oh, when fitting the front door speakers, don't do what I did and fit the crossovers, apparently the feed is already fed through a crossover and adding another one is simply not required.

I read that on the 4200 if you fit crossovers on the fronts the NIT would think there is double the amount of speakers giving the full range to the tweeters and eventually the NIT goes pop(?) Guessing an aftermarket amp will circumvent that too.

This document has some useful infor nothing that hasn't already been discussed https://checkvist.com/checklists/47779?simple=true

I fitted a really good pair of coaxial Pioneer fronts and rears in my GS Spyder and then played with the sound distribution (volume and frequency) through my Becker Cascade. I tried disconnecting the standard tweeters but in the end left them connected as they seemed to contribute something to the overall sound. I would describe the sound now as extremely good, even cranked right up.

Going to do similar on my GS shortly. In my experience, the biggest difference is in the quality of the speakers you fit, particularly if you can then optimise the sound distribution between speakers. Not sure if this possible with the NIT in a 4200.
