3200 - P0335 RPM Sensor faulty

HI I'm new here.
I've just bought a 1999 3200 Maserati, and it's beautiful, dark blue and cream leather….It's showing 39,000 mile, but I have no history with it and only 1 key, I've managed to buy a second key from a local company in Hull for £100, so at least I now have a spare key. I have no history with it, but that was reflected in the price and I can only look at the last 4 mileages on the MOT, but it would appear that in the last couple of years the car has only done a couple of thousand each year. I've removed the alarm (because I don't have any fobs for it) and I'm going to send this to Abacus who can map some new Fobs to it.
All looks great but the car now stops whilst driving, fortunately as I pull up and the engine dies and then won't start; the engine turns over but doesn't fire. If I leave it for 20 minutes or so to cool down then all is good and it runs, but I can't keep it like this.
I borrowed a diagnostic code reader, and the first time showed lots of faults:
p0110 air temp
p0560 battery voltage
0330 knock sensor 2
p0335 rpm sensor
0208 injector circuit open cylinder 8
0326 knock sensor 1 circuit
0331 knock sensor circuit 2
1107 sensor heater circuit upstream catalyst bank 2 sensor 1
p0120 throttle potentiometer
0221 throttle pedal position sensor

And then on subsequent stops I can read
P0335 RPM Sensor
And sometimes P0500 Vehicle speed sensor or 0326 Knock sensor

I believe the real problem is the P0335 RPM Sensor, this is the re-occurring code….

I've ordered and just received a replacement RPM Sensor (£15.00) from Eurospares, and I also ordered a Cam belt kit.

I'm going to fit both the sensor and the cam belt kit later this week and then all being well, will use the car again at the weekend. I also ordered a new Oil filter, but when I look at the dipstick and look at the existing oil; it looks clean, so will probably leave that until later during the year – unless someone advices me to also change this. As I said earlier I have no history (document or otherwise) with the car. I'm starting my own now by keeping the receipts for the service I'm about to do.

I'll post my findings on here after the replacement parts have been fitted.
All good wishes
Paul

Paul,
A warm welcome to the forum, good choice of car.
Firstly, if you are not sure of the history, CHANGE THE OIL, these cars need a high end oil due to the turbo heat 10w60, you don't know what oil is in there, clean or not..?? The stopping fault could be the TDC Sensor, try the RPM Sensor and see if it is any different. Sounds like you might need the knock sensors done if they have not been already, there are 2 and a Maserati Independent Specialist should be able to help you there. Knock Sensors will affect rev limits and performance. Throttle Pot can be an issue on these cars, there is a member on here who makes new ones for a decent price if you need one. Throttle Pedal you can try and reset yourself, if that does not work it's a simple replacement part. To reset, switch on and slowly push the pedal to the floor, hold it, then slowly release, switch off.
Hope you sort out the little issues, they do not sound to be major.
Cheers

Sounds like the sensor to me, had exact same problem with the Merc. Crank sensor got hot and car would die, stops fuel pump in it's case, so cranked but wouldn't fire. Leave 20mins or so would fire up and run for a while and do it again. Hopefully a cheap and easy fix for you.

Many Thanks for the replies and guidance, I've just ordered new oil, Shell Helix....and will also change this week, I'll take a good look at the water pump whilst I'm chnaging the belt, if there is any sign of wear, I'll order a replacment. Thanks again....

Mine failed to start completely - faulty sensor, easy fix but not if you have big hands!
I found the oil dipstick tube prevented the sensor from being removed easily and 'lost' my 5mm allen key on a ledge somewhere undoing the 3 bolts that hold it to the engine.
I still haven't found it. It needed loosening a bit to give that extra 2mm of clearance.

Paul,
Make sure you have the 10w60 oil, the 60 is vital for the turbo's. I don't think Helix has a 60 rating, you would have to buy something like the Selenia Racing to get the right rating. Please don't skimp on this rating, the turbos will eat a lesser oil and themselves.
