QP/GT front subframes - the truth

Wasn’t even aware of that until I googled it just now, but yeah, that looks the business!

QP/GT front subframes - the truth

The question is how to ensure that it’s treated on the inside. There are some zinc processes that might work (hot dip would warp it) and that produce a good key for powdercoating.

QP/GT front subframes - the truth

Yeah, they need to take lessons from Apple.

QP/GT front subframes - the truth

Mice will eat it before rust gets it.

QP/GT front subframes - the truth

New subframe arrived today, stuck it in my shed for now. Paint on it’s pathetic, no wonder these rust.

    Cold Start Noise

Has a longer listen and tried more places. Nothing that particularly jumps out. Listening on the left side, up around where the oil filler cap is quieter than opposite area on right side. I reckon that’s because there’s a big pulley lower down on the right side. EDIT: I can distinguish a...

    Cold Start Noise

Stethoscope arrive this afternoon. All I hear is “whoosh”, which I reckon is mainly the sound of fluids rushing around. I’ve tried it at the bottom of the V, further up the timing case on each side, and the on the rocker covers. There are more noises up on the rocker covers, presumably...

    Cold Start Noise

I’m no expert, but from what I can gather it depends on where the chain guide travels to/lodges, and whether the timing slips before you realise what’s happened… and by how much. If it has slipped at all then the car will likely be misfiring, but there might not be any catastrophic damage if...

    Cold Start Noise

Thanks for the offer. I’m setting up a friend’s motorcycle suspension tomorrow morning, so wouldn’t be able to make it over to the airport. I haven’t started the motor since shooting the video, am waiting for a stethoscope to arrive. The car only has 24,000 miles and has had specialist...

    Cold Start Noise

Thanks. Can you tell me what time in the video you can hear the washing machine noise? Is that where it sounds like an electric cooling fan kicking in at 1m15s? I’m 35 miles Northwest of Aberdeen. Nearest specialist is 200 miles away. The car isn’t misfiring and no checklight on, but how...

A video about fixing my 2008 Granturismo.

Good news is that new subframes are available once again.

    Cold Start Noise

Thanks. Inconsistent noises seem to be a feature of Italian engines. It’s the same with my Ducati, and especially my Laverda. Whereas the likes of a Porsche, a BMW, or a Kawasaki tend to produce the same limited repertoire of “click”, “whir”, “broom” and “woosh” noises under a discrete set of...

    Cold Start Noise

@conaero @Zep Here's a link to a movie of a cold start I took this morning. Sort of a "brrrrrrrrrrrr" like the world's smallest jackhammer, which I *hope* is just the injectors. You can hear it throughout, but it's more pronounced near the end of the clip. This is noticeable inside the...

    Cold Start Noise

Yeah, had 911s for past 18 years and a TVR before that. Last car I heard injectors on was a Mitsubishi GTO… but that was front engined, so could only hear them with the bonnet open. Had forgotten what they sounded like. But yeah, it’s a perfect clickety 8-beat, at idle, when cold.

    Cold Start Noise

Phew… my car is 4.7 from 2014, and reckon I’m hearing the injectors for about 60secs on cold starts.

    Wheel Options for Granturismo

What it is, when a manufacturer produces a car, they either leave room in the arches for higher performance versions to accommodate wider wheels, or they don’t, and then later fit wheel arch extensions. It looks like Maserati left some space in the arches, because the wheels appear recessed...

    Wheel Options for Granturismo

Done several hours of research on this, so here’s everything you need to know. I’m assuming that no one wants to reduce clearances by any significant amount. From what I can gather a lowered car can accommodate wider front wheels, although I’m not clear on why this is… have to assume that the...

    Wheel Options for Granturismo

Looking at fitting new alloys, any pointers? I’ve noticed that the rear arches are comparatively larger than the front arches, and am also planning to fit adjustable coilovers with axel lifts, so I reckon 21” wheels might work better at the rear. For both ends I figure to put on wider wheels...
