Is it going to be one of those years for famous people dying?

FFS, you miserable bastards. 61 million people died in 2023.

As 134 million babies were born in the same period, maybe we should start a thread titled 'Is it going to be one of those years for famous people being born?'? (I'll get my crystal ball.) Or 'Oooh, it's getting a bit crowded, isn't it?'. Or 'Thank god, that's another square foot freed up'.

Good driver, back in the day remember him well in F3 races with Coulthard & Barrichello

56 is no age - RIP
No age at all! I met him when he was at BAR Honda and he was a very open and interesting man. He took me for a few laps of the old Silverstone circuit in an S2000. V quick but smooth and do those guys brake late, Bridge was especially scary as it was blind.
A heart attack apparently, perhaps a reminder to get health checks more often.

When I did some driver training at Millbrook in my S2000 they wanted me to brake late - very scary, and I was the driver!
The art of fast driving be as late on the brakes as possible and as early on the accelerator and in between keep it on the grey stuff. The Cat guys at Millbrook are pretty good one of my good friends is an instructor there so spent many an hour experimenting with braking points

I had the chance to go in a tandem single seater and recall at the end of a long straight into a tight right hander thinking my driver has passed out and I am going to die because we must have missed the braking point by at least 50m! Then he hit the brakes so hard my tears hit the visor and my internal organs tried to escape! In a microsecond we were back on full power! To do this with competitors cms apart in a race is incredible. TV really slows everything down sadly so we don't get close to the reality of how skilled these guys are.

When we were young, 20 ish, we did some marshalling for a corporate rally experience day with Penti Airikala taking the corporates out in a works Galant VR-4 at Silverstone. During the lunch break Penti decided he didn't want to be polite to the corporates so asked us if we would like passenger rides with him. Obviously we all agreed and we all had the same experience into the first corner, I think he missed the breaking point, he did miss the breaking point we're going to crash, he certainly missed it and we are going to die - then the brakes came on the car started to slide in the wrong direction a quick flick and it was sliding the opposite direction and as the power came back in the car shot off down the next straight. This was repeated on every corner and none of us died.

We all thought we were budding rally drivers but we had just experienced the level the big boys were at and we were never going to get close.

Having spent many hours with my father and the Jolly Club as a boy I knew there was only one Sport for me and that was Rallying and I had to be the driver.
Enjoyed every moment and spanked lots of cash.
Have never played any other sports just wasn't interested.
Next to the Rallying was my Enduro motorcycle racing a lot cheaper and the Best Exercise you will ever get next to living like James Hunt or Eddie Irvine.

In tribute I would quite like a Mitsubishi 3000GT Beckenbauer Edition.

Whatever happened to your normal one, @dickygrace ?
Don’t have one of those Mr Busheys. But I will wear my Adidas Beckenbauer Allrounds in honour of the great man tomorrow.
