http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-re...-carrera-used-997-long-term-test-review-2015/

check out the report in Car magazine at the 6 month ownership. Unfortunately the GS gets a bit of a kicking against a 997. Seems a bit unfair really as one is a 2009 reg, the other a 2006, so not like for like, but according to Ben Oliver the 997 is on another level.
Still, we are all different and see things others don't and we will keep loving the brand no matter what!!

For me one thing you won't ever beat is the Italian V8 soundtrack.
I get the Classic 911 and my father had a couple many years ago and they sound good.
Did Silverstone in a 964 lightweight that was amazing.
How he can pick on his GS like he does after coming out of the old Lotus he had amazes me.
Personally I hope he has difficulty selling it.

Agreed and seeing an Italian exotic is always an event. but there is a reason the 997 is so popular and that's because of reports like the Car mag one that makes many spend their "hard earnt" on something perceived to be the best in class.

What annoys me is the criticism of the F1 Gearbox its a work of art and if your a proper driver thats what you want and you drive it as intended.
Driven a few modern 911 with Tiptronic and awful for me.
German cars on the whole back then were well built with very good trim indeed.
I have had many BMW models over the years and the trim always takes the mileage and age well.

I loved the F1 in my 4200. Far more than the DPK in the 911 I had. I will, without hesitation, get an MC-shift next.

And I don't even class myself as a 'proper' driver.

Totally agree, after driving many autos, dsg's etc with paddles, the F1 gearbox to me is the only one that you feel you are actually in control of, and that you drive it just like a manual with a gear stick, but use the paddle instead of your hand on the stick.

Gransport anytime, trouble is Mike, Porsche will still supply all the parts to keep them on the road in ten years time!

I see that in the 13 month test, of 12,000 miles, the 997 cost £11.5k in servicing and depreciation. That's hardly a recommendation.

Wow thats Ferrari running costs.
One thing for sure driving fast on track the Cambio Corsa is excellent.
When I tracked my BMW E36 M3 3.0 the gearbox which was fine on the road was hard work on track.

The F1 gearbox in the 4200 and Gransport is crude compared to the modern ones but that maybe its appeal....The modern boxes are faster and seamless which improves performance but the older boxes you have to learn to drive smoothly which is part of the appeal. The only thing I found with the GS box was the long throw when changing.....it was slow coming from my M3 CSL which was the most engaging paddle shift I've every driven....but that car was built for the track so a different experience. The paddle shift on the GT S was a big improvement and was a good balance between cruising and giving it some......Progress always seems to take away that rawness which is what a modern box does. Driven a couple of 991 911 with paddles and it was awesome and a car for every day and that's the difference between Maserati and Porsche....they are made to be a sports car you can use everyday.....(not talking new Ghibli, Lavante in this just those special sports cars)...Now to be honest the only box you need is a manual and it's great to see Porsche and Aston bringing them back and still offering a manual in some of their sportier cars.......it ain't dead yet and other Supercar makers take note.......
