My apologies, it's been crazy busy for the last 2 days so I haven't been online.

Away from music and onto the joys of accountancy - The current rate of VAT is 20%. What was the rate when VAT was first introduced in the early 70's, replacing the outgoing purchase tax?

I remember all the fuss when it was 17.5% and applied to fuel and other stuff, don't know what it was introduced at, so guess at 12%?

As far as i can recall it was 12.5% late 70s then changed to 15 % in the 80s then 17.5% in the 90s finally 20 % in the 2000s.

There has been standard and upper rates of Vat in the past and you also have the newer 5% energy Vat rate.

We have a winner - 10% it was before briefly dropping to 8% and then followed by the relentless climb to where it is currently

Over to you sir

Not this time boys; how many aircraft, to the nearest 1000, did the British Empire lose during WW2? And how many were fighters?

I think Zag is close, I'm sure I read it was about 40,000 when they did a bit on WW2 before Armistice day. I'm guessing most were fighters because of the Battle of Britain, and when we were bombing Europe, we had the Yanks to do that.
So I'll go with 35,000
