4200 travel jacks and the Centenary

Hi all

Don't want to get into the spare vs repair argument. I have no intention of buying a space saver for the 4200.

What I *would* like to know is:
Can anyone recommend a cheap, portable jack to throw in the boot? If I go for Slime as my repair solution, I need to jack the wheel up to spin it before inflation. I don't really want to use the shaving foam, but I don't want to treat all four tyres either.
Any thoughts?

After my experience currently in Italy with the hire car and THREE garages failing to supply a tyre for a Fiat 500L (nothing special at all), and then getting a replacement hire car instead, I would seriously reconsider having a spacesaver. Really.

Indeed you might. My experience however, is that Slime (or goop) simply removes the need for a spare. Except in specific circumstances. I've had a few punctures in my motoring career. *None* of them could not be repaired in with this.

So, no, I won't be :) Of course, you all have free rein to take the **** mercilessly (as if I could stop you) should I end up being trailered home :)

Extracted for the centenary thread:
Do we need to consolidate a list of who's taking what. I planned to take a 22mm socket, scissor jack and torque wench.

Not sure.
I'm going to have a selection of bits including compressor, tyre gauge, fuses, oil, F1 relay. But we're travelling on.
The only other odds and sods I can thing of off hand are coolant.
I might lob in a 19mm socket and another wrench since we're going on.
If you're going to have a scissor jack and we're going to ignore the TG rules, I'll borrow yours if that's OK. Torque wrench may not be the best idea for undoing bolts, though.
Jump pack may be useful if anyone has a small one?

Torque will be fine for the wheel nuts unless you have had a gorilla fit the wheels. You just select lock and it's a giant wench. Yes I was thinking more in the way down, every person for themselves on the way back and as you we are going on to party!

As much as I regret not being able to come on the trip, I have just picked up a small bottle jack from toolstation which I have measured and goes under the car fine(£9) plus a laser wheel brace(£9) with 19 and 22 mm socket...bargain. Bottle jack comes in a small box.

Perfect.

Sounds it, thanks Jon

I was looking at bottle jacks. Do you have a URL?

I would check that you have enough room with a bottle jack...when the wheel is flat although not as much a problem these days with low profile tyres!
Scissor jacks are more than adequate for this task, and I bought a 2 tonne Draper.

Where did the sissor jack come from and which model please...I need one to get the wheels off for cleaning etc.

Cheers Peter.

I bought a scissor jack off eBay - there are dozens of them for 10-bob and a conker... If you can run to a trolley jack for home use though, you'll be grateful every time you use it - again, a cheap one will do the job for personal use.

10 bob & a conker Drew? :)

Perhaps you should offer a translation for our younger members?

Exactly so - a small amount of loose change, such as one might find in a random pocket check :)
