Just as it should be, the clock ticked over to 83,000 miles at 130mph on an autobahn. The car performing effortlessly and wanting to go faster (or was that me!)
Then about 15 miles of roadworks at 80kph.
W came out of the roadworks, started to speed up and heard and felt a vibration. Gulp. Earlier there had been a few twangs that I'd thought were something else but it was the handbrake cable.
The cable had been noticed to deteriorate at the last service just before our holiday so I thought I could leave that until we came back and I'll change it myself. That was a wrong decision. As we were going on ferries and trains I needed to use it a few times and a consequence of the deterioration was that it was not fully releasing. The shoes then got a little warm and delaminated. The vibration was the LHS parts spinning around in the drum.
A call to the breakdown company got me towed to the nearest Maserati garage, fortunately only 45 mins away, and some new shoes fitted. The garage first suggested a hire car or flying to our next destination and then dropped everything when I told them I needed our car now. They didn't have a cable so instead some electrical tape was put over the lever and a strict technician told me not to use it until the cable was replaced. Message heard and understood.
Despite having to pay Maserati prices I have a lot of praise for the Dealership that helped who were, SZD Sportwagen Zentrum GMBH, Konigsbrunn, just outside Augsberg.
